You may have noticed that usually directors pair up with mega stars. We have Scorsese with DiCaprio, Nolan and Bale and some others. This time we speak of the duo that gave to us “The Gladiator”, director Ridley Scott and testosterone filed mega star Russell Crowe. The two have come together for another epic, “Robin Hood“.
Unlike what we’ve seen before this film presents the story of Robin Longstride (Russell Crowe) the man that will become Robin Hood (read more about the plot here). This unique approach is what gives power to the story and manages to keep you glued to your seat for more then two hours.
As I’ve learned from Russell Crowe (during a Letterman show), the set is created somewhere near a river in America and they have actually built a castle there. They have little to no computer generated background and this gives the film authenticity and a big plus from me.
I was commenting yesterday that they have chosen a rather delicate figure to play the main role. Well here we have a masculine figure to play the leading role and there was no better person that could have played Robin Hood then Russell Crowe. He is both serious and charming at the same time, he is strong but delicate, a true gentleman and a warrior at the same time. The part was played perfectly and you can really connect to the star on the screen.
Also on the positive note, all the other actors helped in getting me into the medieval atmosphere and set the stage for a true epic movie.
I have one negative thing that I just have to mention. The character of Lady Marion, which was played magnificent by Cate Blanchett, is a little bit of to what I have imagined. Here the Lady is a true fighter and can use the bow and arrow with an impressive accuracy.
Because yesterday I said that “Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time” is the best legend movie I have seen lately, I come now to retract that and say that “Robin Hood” is the best legend movie I have seen lately. With this matter in my mind I have posted in the right side of the blog a poll to see which legendary figure you enjoyed better.
Conclusion: “Robin Hood” is a must see movie because of the great sets created, the atmosphere of medieval times, the new light to an old story, the great acting, the lovely war scenes and more. I have rated it only with an 8 because of the flaws (or so I consider them) with Lady Marion’s character and because as a whole it still misses a spark (can’t really explain what).
