Last November I was advertising about a great horror movie, “The Fourth Kind” – remember it. Last night I saw it and it’s not at all what I thought it would be.
For starters it’s not a horror movie as I presented it the first time. It’s more of a sci-fi thriller.
The movie begins with the actress Milla Jovovich, stating that she will be playing the role of doctor Abigail Tyler, a psychologist, that continues the studies of her murdered husband.
Abey is now doing research on unexplained phenomenons that take place in the small town of Nome, Alaska. Her studies reveal that this town is visited by extraterrestrial forms of intelligence and that they are dealing with alien abductions. This is where the movie gets it’s name from. According to Abey, there are four kinds of extraterrestrial experiences:
- Sights
- Evidence
- Contact
- Abduction
Anyways, as I was not at all impressed with the story I will not go on with what the hell is happening.
Throwout the movie, in order to make it as realistic as possible, they show in parallel the dramatization of events, and actual footage taken by the real dr. Tyler. This way “The Fourth Kind” actually gives the impression of a documentary, with the movie itself being some sort of reconstruction of events. They lead us into believing in alliens and such theories, telling us that what we chose to believe is our business. I for one, after seeing the face of the real doctor now believe in aliens! She looks like… an alien!
And now for the really interesting part.
It seems that the real facts on which “The Fourth Kind” is based on, aren’t so real after all. They are just a piece of marketing.
Noori Greewal from “Anchorage Daily News” revealed that the premise of the movie is just a hawks, and that there are no more unresolved deaths or disappearances in Nome, then any other city in Alaska, and it is generally accepted that a high alcoholism rate plus the specific landscape is the general cause of people not showing up home. Some even go to the extent of not believing that dr. Abigail Tyler is a true person. Further more, “Universal Movies” payed 20.000$ to the Alaska press club in order to settle complaints about fake news used to promote the movie.
I have no idea what the truth is, and no intent to research on this, but it is my personal belief, after seeing the movie and reading the article about the fabricated facts, that the “actual footage” presented in “The Fourth Kind” is actually fabricated, but that Abigail Tyler is an real person, and that she has some issues, based on the death of her husband and that she actually believes in all the story and that is why she agreed to falsifying footage, so that people will believe her.
All in all, it is a watchable movie, with a good performance from Milla Jovovich, but nothing impressive. It would have been way more interesting if they didn’t try to make it look like a documentary and made just a nice sci-fi story out of it, with some sort of an ending…
