"Bad Lieutenant" Release date 20.11.2009

October 12, 2009

It’s this year’s second Nicholas Cage movie. After “Knowing“, which was a, let’s say, discusable success, the successfull actor from “Con Air” comes back in “Bad Lieutenant: Port of Call New Orleans”. The movie was presented first at the “Venice Film Festival” and got some interesting remarks, including praisings of Cage’s performance, which from what I saw in the trailer, they might be right this time. It is possible that Nicholas Cage finally got a part right, but I do not dare go as far as saying that “Cage gives a hypnotic performance” as Roger Ebert from “Chicago Sun Times” says. Some other critics go and say that he “gives what is surely his best performance in years” and “is so much fun to watch”.

We should not leave asside the fact that along side of Nicholas Cage we find Eva Mendes and Val Kilmer. Mendes is Cage’s love interest and plays the role of a prostitute, and Kilmer is his partner.

The basic line of “Bad Lieutenant” is good cop goes bad cop. Terence McDonagh (Nicholas Cage) is a hero cop, getting a medle for acts of bravery during the Katrina Hurricane. Unfortunelly for him he hurt his back and later becomes an addict to prescription pain killers and all other sort of “chemicals”. From this point on it’s obvious he gets involved with all kind of bad persons, including drug dealers, and also he gets to do all sort of “unorthodox” things to feed his addictions.

I have to say I’m a bit sceptic about the movie, but nevertheless anxious to see it.
As a plus, the movie is also surrounded by controversy and media scandal. Being a remake, the director of the original movie in 1992 stated: “As far as remakes go,… I wish these people die in Hell”.
