"Public Enemies" Release date 18.06.2009 – review

July 12, 2009

The movie presents the story of notorius crime face John Dillinger. John Dillinger (Johnny Depp) is a cocky, charming, bank robber hunted down by Melvin Purvis (Christian Bale), the good FBI agent, with a bad team at first, during America’s first war on crime (when J. Edgar Hoover was the director of the FBI).

Although I am a fan of Bale, I’m not impressed with how he plays his role. He doesn’t seem to be able to make his character different then his roles in “Equillibrium” or the “The Dark Knight” and, what’s even worse, he can’t even make his character shine out of the rest of the cast. The only difference between him and the rest of the actors (except Depp) is the number of lines. On the other hand, Johnny Depp plays his part in an extraordinary way and you just can’t get enough of him. He manages to mix his emotions in just the right doses thus making it impossible for any viewer not to fall in love with him.

I think the movie was a bit to long and could gave been a bit more concentrated, thus making the movie a bit borring at times, but even so the story is a pretty nice one.
What I especaially liked about the movie, apart from Johnny Depp’s performence, is how they reproduced the atmosphere of America in the 1930′s. This is a thumbs up for costumes, soundtrack and everything else that contributed to taking us back in time.

You will find in the movie that they have special appearences from Clark Gable and William Powel. I’ll let you discover them:).

That’s my opinion on the movie. If you decide to see it aswell, enjoy!

  1. I come today in front of you because I feel the need to explain myself. This is because of the criticism to Christian Bale. I'm not a profesional movie critic, I'm not a journalist, I don't have a professional opinion, but I, as an individual, have an opinion and I'm entitled to express it. I recently read an interview with Mr. Bale in the "Esquire" magazine, and it seems like he is a nice guy, who worked really hard to get where he is and gives 100% in the projects he's involved in. But that doesn't mean that his 100% in this movie satisfied me. I don't think I could have acted better then him, but I'm just saying I personally did not like his performance here. I'm looking forward to his next movie (actually I'm planing to see "Terminator: Salvation" just now.
