August’s openings

July 20, 2009
After a full July with premiers like “Transformers 2“, “Harry Potter”, “Ice Age 3″, “Public Enemies” and so on, August is not that gifted in this matter. You could actually say that the marketing department at Hollywood realized that most people are on vacation in this month and probably have no cinema nearby or no will to go to one while they are on an exotic island. The next month seems to be a kick in the… face for cinemas worldwide as they will most likely have very small earnings, maybe the ones that will still play July’s movies will get some incoming cash.

Even so we have two movies worth mentioning in August.

With the release date set for the 21st of August, Tarantino’s movie, “Inglorious Basterds“, staring Brad Pitt, is definitely the highlight of August’s movies. The action is placed in Nazi occupied France during World War II. A group of American soldiers and their leader, Lt Aldo Raine (Pitt), known as “The Basterds” are designated to spread fear among The Third Reich, their mission: to terrorize German troops by brutally killing their men.

Aldo’s speech in the trailer is just delicious and it’s a must see. Enjoy it bellow:

The second opening in July is “The Final Destination”, release date 28.08.2009. This is the last of the series and has the same plot as the others before, because of the premonition Hunt (Nick Zano) a group of people manage to escape a great accident, but death wants to settle the score. What’s worth mentioning about this 4th movie is that this one will be 3D and I still haven’t decided if my heart can take a horror movie 3D. As you can see it’s not a mind testing movie but it has some nice effects and I’m really curios how they will look in digital 3D. See for your own:

Well this is it. Have a great vacation and enjoy your DVD’s as you won’t be going to the cinema that often ;) !

  1. Talking about "The Basterds"…
    I haven't seen this film yet. I will try to explain why:
    1. Because of…Pitt's disgusting short moustaches and protruding jaw;
    2. Make-up eyes of Eli Roth;
    3. And as the be-all and end-all of all arguments (the above two were just a joke) – a lot of violent scenes (but what do I want…….this's Tarantino;-)).
    But to my mind it should be still amusing to observe such a large-scale battle, as said one russian critic, "who to whom will break the neck: Tarantino – to the myth about World War II or military myth – to K. Tarantino".

    P.S. And what about your own opinion about this film, without standard phrases, which could be read in different sources.
    I mean how much did YOU like it and for what? Is it really worth seeing?

  2. Dear Panora,

    First of all, the name really suites you. Now what you did not get from my post was the fact that I haven't seen this movie yet, at the time I wrote the post the movie wasn't even in the cinema yet. My comments were purely based on the trailer and related articles, and so I created the image for me that the movie was wort seeing. I can end up loathing the movie as it happened with Fighting (http://criticisemovies.blogspot.com/2009/06/fighting-release-date-31072009.html). I plan on going next week to see it and be sure I will come back with a post then.

  3. I hope, dear Silviu, that you actually meant "Pandora" and not "Panora" spaeking about "the name which really suites me".

    P.S. I wiil be waiting for your coming back with a post.;-)))
    And believe me – I will try to make my future post neither mean nor shallow as I am also going to watch "The Basterds" this week.
    So, we will have a chance to compare notes.
